Behind The Muse: Pop and Rock's Greatest Songwriters Talk About Their Work and Inspiration
Published in Paperback by Tiny Ripple Books (30 November, 2001)
Average review score:

An absorbing, unusual titlePlenty of individual titles cover pop and rock star biographies and works, but Bill DeMain's Behind The Muse provides an unusual compendium of insights on modern songwriters who talk about their works and inspirations, from Dolly Parton and Billy Joel to Jobim and Burt Bachrach and Tori Amos. The diversity of personalities who appear side by side to share their insights makes for an absorbing, unusual title.
He's not a critic, he's a SONGWRITER......and that's why this collection of interviews merits a place of honor in your music library. Bill DeMain appreciates and creates fine songs. And that's the difference. Because he's a songwriter--and a damn good one at that--he brings a refreshing dimension to discussions with some of pop music's most celebrated (Hal David, Jimmy Webb) and, in some cases, least appreciated songsmiths (Nick Lowe, Dolly Parton). I'd place this alongside Bill Flanagan's "Written in My Soul" as a must-have for would-be and working songrwriters alike. And even if you just plain love listening to music, you'll still enjoy this book.

Behind the Music: The Day the Music Died
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (31 October, 2000)
Average review score:

Memories Abound In This BookLarry Lehmer's hardcover book entitled "The Day the Music Died" gives a very detailed review of the ill-fated Winter Dance Party in which Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J. P. Richardson, aka "The Big Bopper" took part. If you would like to read a more concise version of these three singers I would strongly suggest you buy a copy of the paperback copy of "Behind the Music: The Day the Music Died." This book contains 122 pages and includes numerous pictures of the singers in addition to the crash site. Comments from family members and those who were close to the singers make up the prose of the book leading to accuracy in what they say. I read the book in three sittings. Make sure you have time when you sit down to read it because you will want to continue. I intend to order numerous additional copies to give as gifts to friends. Many thanks to authors Martin Huxley and Quinton Skinner for putting the book together.
Nice bookFor my recent birthday, my mom bought me a copy of this book. She didn't want to spend too much, and although I was skeptical at first, I actually enjoyed it. I was very surprised at how well the text flowed, considering there is just so much separate commentary throughout the course of it. As strange as it may seem, this event just fascinates me, and this book was a good source of information. ....

Best of Dave Matthews Band for Easy Guitar
Published in Paperback by Cherry Lane Music (April, 2001)
Average review score:

Excellent song bookBought this because I was interested in learning some of DMB's music, and I have to say, this is an excellent resource! All songs have notes & tabulature (for you lazy guitarists ;) and all of them are fun to play... my favorite to play is Crash :)
A Great Guitar BookI bought this book as my first guitar book, because I was about to start learning how to play. The DMB was (and still is) my favorite band, so I figured that if I learned to play their music, it would keep me motivated and I would want to practice. The music was just right for me, and I have so much playing it!

Between Thought and Expression: Selected Lyrics of Lou Reed
Published in Hardcover by Hyperion Pr (October, 1991)
Average review score:

DIVERSE & PROVOCATIVEIt's remarkable how well Reed's lyrics work as poetry. The lyrics encompass his work from 1965 to 1990, from "I'll Be Your Mirror" (Velvets) to "A Dream" from the Songs For Drella album. Many are illuminated with notes, eg. "PR shoes" in I'm Waiting For The Man refers to *"puerto rican fence climbers", All Tomorrow's Parties, *"This was Andy's favorite song", Candy's Song (with a short biographical note on Candy), Pale Blue Eyes (written for someone whose eyes were hazel), How Do You Think It Feels ("By speed I mean injectable liquid Methedrine") and so forth. Many lyrics are from albums panned by the critics (Legendary Hearts, The Bells, Sally Can't Dance, Mistrial, Growing Up In Public). There is one poem from a literary magazine: The Slide, from Unmuzzled Ox. Then there are the interviews with Vaclav Havel and with Hubert Selby. The Bells ends the book, in Reed's own words: "... it remains my favorite to this day." The discography/index lists all the lyrics and the albums on which they appear. The hardcover edition has a classy black & gold dust jacket. This book is essential for all Lou Reed fans, for pleasure reading and as a reference.
Five stars is not enough for this book...I've been a Lou Reed fan for about a year now. This book has a lot to do with it. When I heard one of his songs, I thought it was just so beautiful. A person I care about very much let me borrow this book, and told me to read it since I loved that song so much. This book really touched my heart, and I read it the whole thing in one day. I've never read more achingly beautiful poems and lyrics in all my life. No other person has Lou's gift for writing lyrics. This is a wonderful book that made me see life in a totally different way. Anyone who doesn't own this book should buy it now. You have to read it yourself to know what I'm talking about.

Big Bend of the Rio Grande: A Guide to the Rocks, Landscape, Geologic History, and Settlers of the Area of Big Bend National Park/Guidebook 7/Maps
Published in Paperback by Bureau of Economic Geology, Univ. Texas (December, 1990)
Average review score:

Best Buy for Excellent Information. This book, along with Smither's CHRONICLES OF THE BIG BEND, are MUST READS for the serious Chisos Mountains area hiker. Along with the historical/geological/botanical/zoological everything elseical information, Maxwell includes a packet of foldout maps. The maps alone are worth the price of the book. Don't worry about the publication dates of the above books, nature works on a time-scale that makes these books timeless to the human reader. Most of the more recent publications can't come close to adding anything new to this information.
An broad overview of the Big Bend regionThis book does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the Big Bend region. Even those who have experienced the beauty of the region and its people will find this book a handy reference. The author is a former superintendent of Big Bend National Park. As described in the title, the book covers the geology of Big Bend (including an excellent introduction to geological processes for the uninitiated like myself), the history of Big Bend (including the histories of place names and other local legends), and an overview of local vegetation and the native uses of the vegetation by the old curanderos. Included throughout the book are 117 illustrations and black and white photographs. Many of the photographs offer a unique glimpse into the lives of those who settled this rugged country. Also included with the book are five separately printed illustrations, including a 360-degree panorama of The Basin (obviously from days long ago - notice the lack of trees!), and several geological maps. This is definitely the favorite book in my Big Bend library!

Bill Graham Presents
Published in Audio Cassette by Audio Literature (January, 1994)
Average review score:

Unforgetable! This is a must read for any music lover! I used it all the time as a reference point when reading about the industry.
I Feel Liike I Was ThereThis is a fascinating book that traces the life of one of the most controversial and influential people in the history of Rock and Roll. Accounts from his early years by himself as well as his friends provide insight into how he became the fiery rock impressario that he was.
It is, however, the accounts from the later years and the tales from his famous and infamous Fillmore Auditoriums from insiders such as Jerry Garcia and Eric Clapton that really make this book come alive. They make feel like you were there (or at least wish you were) for many of the most crucial events in the history of Rock and Roll- Altamont, Woodstock, etc... Fantastic for the unabashed music fan!

Blessing Cup
Published in Paperback by St Anthony Messenger Press (June, 1994)
Average review score:

A Perfect Wedding GiftMy husband and I received the Blessing Cup book and a blessing cup for a wedding present 4 years ago. It has helped us bring religion into our home without feeling awkward. It has been such a great experience, I am now buying it for my cousin's wedding.
Great for families. We've used these prayers along with our blessing cup for years. Highly recommend it! When we switched to using the blessing cup, our kids thought we had literally lost our minds. Now, it is a cherished tradition in our home
The pictures alone are sure to delight; the wealth of information is what makes for a very nice package indeed. Inveterate Beatles' fans will love it; lay people will certainly come away with an abundance of knowledge. This book has appeal for all, from the seasoned Beatles' fan to folks interested in learning more about them.
A round of thunderous applause and a hearty "yeah, yeah, yeah"! for this book.
